EV Battery Pack Seals: Compression Set Control at -40°C

EV Battery Pack Seals: Compression Set Control at -40°C

The Challenge

The customer’s existing EPDM seals hardened below -20°C, losing IP68 rating in cold climates. They needed a seal maintaining compression force across -40°C to 150°C with a 10-year design life, validated per their vibration and thermal cycling protocol.

Our Solution

We developed a low-temperature LSR compound with glass transition well below -50°C, validated compression set (<15% at 150°C/22h) and ran the customer’s full thermal cycling + vibration protocol on production-representative parts.

Results

  • ✅ IP68 maintained across full -40°C to 150°C range
  • ✅ Compression set below 15% at 150°C/22h
  • ✅ Passed customer vibration & thermal cycling protocol
  • ✅ Annual volume: 2M+ seals across 3 battery platforms
